Getting to work every day is a chore that we don’t often think about. But our commute choices affect more than just our personal morning routine – there is a ripple affect on traffic, air quality, and your personal finances. Courtney Miller, Program Manager of reThink, will speak on the commute options available to you, from vanpooling to telecommuting, and how reThinking the way you get to work can transform the community. Mighk Wilson the Smart Growth Planner for MetroPlan Orlando will also be in attendance.

And as always, learn how you can get inovlved in the Local First movement in our community, Ourland, and develop local authentic community and culture.

Composting Workshop with Tia Meer

Tia Meer, longtime organic gardener and president of Simple Living Institute, will lead this hands-on workshop on how to build a compost pile. Divert organic waste from the landfill while using your yard clippings and food waste to make your own fertilizer. This workshop will be held on the front patio area of Dandelion Cafe where we will show how our large amount of kitchen scraps can be properly composted.

When: Saturday, January 28, 2012 from 1:30pm until 2:30pm

Wednesday, November 16 at 7 pm Free Admission! Grab your camp chairs and picnic blankets and join us for an outdoor screening The Greenhorns, courtesy of Wise Acre Farm. This new uplifting documentary is about America’s young farming community. Dandelion will be selling our delicious Eat Local Week menu inside, along with other yummy foods and refreshments. Slow Food Orlando will be on site for a discussion about farming in Central Florida. This event is free and family-friendly, so come join us in the Florida School of Holistic Living’s garden next to Dandelion!

This month’s Green Drinks will be especially informative for those of you interested in creating a local food business or those who would like to meet other business representatives in the local food industry. Based on a recent suggestion, we will be discussing the new Cottage Industry law, as well as shared commercial kitchens, and the process it takes to get products into farmers markets and restaurants.

Green Drinks is held the third Thursday of every month starting at 7pm.

In order for us to fully understand the new Cottage Industry Law, which allows some small-scale food production for farmers markets to take place at the home, LuAnn Duncan will be joining us. While the new Cottage Industry Law is a huge break-through, shared kitchens can bring almost any small food business to reality. Once the food is made, the next step is getting it to market.Gabriela Othon Lothrop the director of the Audubon Park Community Market will be sharing the ins and outs of getting into local farmer/community markets. Introduction to Pachamama

We are blessed to bring you a message from deep in the Amazon this week. Good friend and customer Janice Steiber Rous recently returned from the Amazon tasked with Awakening the Dreamers in Florida. She’s starting this week at Dandelion by introducing us to the Pachamama Alliance at Green Drinks, Thursday, February 18th at 7pm. As with all important messages, the universe has seen fit to also serendipitously introduce us to Peruvian Shaman, Healer & Musician Inti Cesar Malesquez who will also be joining us for discussion and a bit of music. Donations for the people of Peru will be graciously accepted.

Tune into Front Porch Radio Wed, Feb 17th at Noon to listen in on a discussion about Pachamama.

You Have To Love A Place

Also, in March we have two events planned that build on the topics discussed – the first is an Art Opening for Marabou Thomas. He’s the first solo artist to be given the privileged of hanging in all three rooms of the cafe, and much of his artwork is rooted in a deep understanding of, well, let’s just say Marabou is already WIDE awake. You are going to LOVE love LOVE his art.

Also coming up during our 4th B-Day Bash on the Spring Equinox (March 20th, more on that soon) we will be visited by the Modern Day Slavery Mobile Museum. It’s all connected, just like you and me.
